Sniff The Past

“An endless road to rediscover”

2023

Sniff the Past is an interactive installation that captures memories through scent. Using wax spheres and acrylic, it preserves the distinct smells associated with the artist's shared experiences with their grandfather. As the installation rotates, these scents are gradually released, triggering memories and emotions. By engaging the sense of smell, often overlooked in memory recall, Sniff the Past offers a unique, multisensory journey into the past, honoring personal and familial history through olfactory stimuli.

This sketch represents the concept for a three-dimensional smell map, which combines the scents collected for the Sniff the Scenes wax blocks with the geographical memories of Xishuangbanna. Each area on the map, such as the trade market, craft street, and riverside, is associated with specific smells, translating memories into tangible, sensory experiences. This map will take shape through wax spheres, further developing the idea of an olfactory-based, immersive cityscape where each point triggers a distinct memory connected to the journey shared with the artist's grandfather.
