Emotional Character

“Everyone is the centre”

2023

People are constantly labelling and categorising in the process of bridging the cultural divide, and indeed this process of categorisation reinforces the divide; the cultural divide cannot be resolved. Can the divide be bridged when everyone becomes a centre and refrains from labelling others? I used characters made from integrated materials to record a literacy video modeled on a 'literacy lesson' and uploaded this video to nft.

The project reinterprets traditional Chinese character formation by using a jigsaw-like process of breaking down existing symbols and combining them into new forms. This creative exploration bridges different cultural scripts—Chinese, Zhuang, and Cantonese—to design new visual languages.Decentralization fosters the coexistence and interaction of multiple cultures and languages, without privileging a single dominant one. This pluralistic approach to character formation reflects a decentralized system where no one cultural or linguistic center dictates the process. The creation of new characters is aligned with the principles of decentralisation, as it serves to dismantle traditional norms, encourage cultural diversity, empower individuals with creative autonomy, and enable the distribution of new symbols through non-centralised channels. This process permits a more flexible, inclusive, and diversified approach to language and expression, which is no longer constrained by traditional centralized control.
